User Reviews about Polk Audio DB651 6.5-Inch Coaxial Speakers (Pair - Silver)
I bought these for my girlfriends car to replace her older speakers. Ended up throwing in foam baffles behind them to help amplify the sound and protect the rear of the speakers as well.
The speakers are some of the highest quality I have even used and installed. I personally have owned and installed dozens of big name brands, but these are by far some of the nicest ones. The reviews dont lie, these are GREAT speakers! Id highly recommend these to anyone. -- Perfect speakers
I bought these speakers on Amazon and installed them about 9 months ago, and I freakin love them. I actually think they are still getting better even now. I find myself taking drives now just to listen to my sound system, which might sound weird to some but if you had these speakers you would understand. I have them running of an Alpine Power Pack amplifier attached to my Alpine head unit CDE-102, and they receive about 45 watts RMS each. In the back I have a pair of Alpine SPS600's, which are similarly priced speakers, but there is no comparison. These Polks rock twice as hard! In all fairness, I do have dynamat installed in the doors these speakers are in, but even before I added that the bass of these speakers impressed me. I get compliments all the time on how clear these sound and I can only imagine how the components must be. The bottom line is that if you want some powerful and crisp speakers in your car for around $60, these are the only way to go. I spent about a month researching before I bought, and I am happy to say that I dont feel like I wasted any of that time. Seriously, go buy some Polks on Amazon and rest easy knowing that you just got top of the line for half price. -- Polk Audio All The Way!!
I bought these speakers to replace the original speakers on the rear deck of a 2005 Honda Civic sedan. There is some improvement in the overall sound quality but the improvement is not as great as I had hoped for, especially in the bass. They do fit well though and can be used with the original speaker grills. -- Polk Audio DB651
The installation wend really well. They provided all the necessary parts for installation and then some. Sound: MUCH clearer compared to OEM 350z speakers. The high's and mid's are very clean and do not distort when volume is cranked. Bass is what you expect out of 6.5" speaker. However, it is tight and does not get muddy. It will cap out as you turn the volume up though. As far as the packaging, the box these comes in is small, but it's thick and very well padded. The appearance is subject to a lot of opinoins, but they appear well constructed and made of good materials.
-- even better than I expected
While the dealer assured me that the "premium sound system" wouldn't need to have the speakers upgraded if I decided to put in a touch screen DVD/NAV system, reality proved otherwise.
The stock speakers sounded really good with the top up, but with the top down at highway speeds, it was just a muddled bunch of noise.
The smart car forums had many people recommending this set, because it fit well without any real modifications to the door. So I grabbed a pair.
After having to pull the entire door apart (since the smart car has them mounting OUTSIDE IN, so they are held from behind the door panel, necessitating removal of most of the door, mirrors, handle, etc) I found that while they fit circumference wise, they didn't fit screw hole wise. The stock speakers had four screwholes, at cardinal points, 90 degrees apart. While these speakers also had that, the speaker ADAPTERS to mount with do not. So I was forced to use only two screws to secure it to the door, and had to even cut the screws short so they wouldn't bore through the door panel and stick out into the passenger compartment. Side note, seeing these "premium speakers" supplied by the manufacturer, laying on the floor next to the Polks, you could tell that the auto manufacturer's idea of premium is laughable at best. Cheap paper cones, just like anything I've pulled out of a car 25 years ago.
But when half way done, with the drivers side speaker replaced and the passenger side still stock, I played with my stereo some, comparing the two sides with rock, jazz, classical... High volume, low volume, testing it out, and there WAS a very noticeable difference.
So I replaced the second side, buttoned it all back up, while thinking to myself "Had I known what a pain this was going to be, I never would've started." And this is from someone who has been swapping out stereos in my cars since the mid 80's...
However, the first time I dropped the top, got on the interstate, and wound my new head unit up about 50% volume, I was glad I went through all the hassle.
Difference is night and day. I have a stock subwoofer, so at least their crossovers keep the bass from muddling too much on these, but considering how bad the stocks sounded, these were very impressive. Even at high speeds, lots of wind noise, I can get my music sounding surprisingly clear now. I haven't really cranked them past the 50% mark since I prefer to keep my hearing intact for a few more years, but that has proven to be sufficient for decent volume and clarity on the road. Once I slow down, I just lower the volume.
Even at lower volume levels, the sound is amazing compared to the stock speakers. So all around, I am very happy. And for such a cheap price, there's no way to beat it. -- Work well in my smart ForTwo cabrio
