User Reviews about Polk Audio DB571 5-by-7-Inch Coaxial Speakers (Pair - Black)
Polk db571 in a 2003 Ford Explorer with stock radio, no factory subwoofer
Time used 12 hours
Tested with local radio station and one CD, "Slippery When Wet" by Bon Jovi (favorite album of all time)
Summary:
The speakers provide a much cleaner and crisper response than the factory speakers at mid and high ranges. There seems to be some lower response loss. The lower frequencies are coming through cleaner, but not as prominent. This may be due to factory speakers providing a "muddier" output in the low areas. It also may be due to the factory speaker being a 6x8 vs. this 5x7. Overall, I like these speakers. The new head unit arrives tomorrow. I believe this will liven up the lower frequencies. The new HU has a 7-band EQ vs. the stock HU having only two (bass and treb).
Pros:
Excellent high-end and mid range response. Very clean and clear sound throughout the frequencies.
Cons:
Not an "exact" fit into the door panels of the 2003 Explorer. Took a little creative screw angles to get them to fit. No instruction on what the black rings were used for. "Perceived" some loss of lower frequencies from stock speakers.
Story:
I decided to swap the factory speakers for new, aftermarket as part of a stereo upgrade for my explorer. I searched around and found these speakers as direct replacements (no adapters for fitment needed). I am usually skeptical about buying something like this online, so I found them locally and visited the store. I tested these speakers on their wall of speakers against others in the price range and other higher priced models. My test simply consisted of running the head unit with a flat EQ on a local radio station. Many of the offerings sounded similar. The higher priced units had more high end response, as expected. I then switched the head unit to a preset "rock" EQ. These speakers came alive with response. The other models did not sound as good with this EQ setting. I cannot state if the shop was using the radio amp or an external amp to drive the speakers on the wall. Of the models in the price range, these sounded the best. I believe they are a great deal.
I am considering adding a small powered subwoofer to fill in the bottom end of the music. I will make this decision after the new HU is installed and EQ-d.
They came with black trim rings taped to the speakers. I was told these are not needed for my installation. I guess the rings are a shipping spacer to prevent damage. -- 4.5 stars
I bought these speakers to replace a pair of infinity's that i had purchased about 5 years ago, and just recently fell apart on me, literally. After noticing some rattling I realized that the tweeter had actaully come unglued on the the right front speaker (infinity). So, I started searching Amazon.com for a pair of replacement speakers. I found these Polks on [...] originally, then I found a better deal on Amazon.com, and after reading some pretty good reviews on a number of different sites, I decided to go w/ these speakers. I got them pretty quickly and immediately installed them, replacing the infinity's and began to 'break-in' the Polks. They keep sounding better every day, it's been about 2 weeks since they've been installed and I think that they're just about 'broke-in', cuz they have really hit their stride. I get some really good mid-range and high end frequency response from these speakers. The bass is so-so, but that's why I have a pair of 10" subs in the trunk. Over all they sound good for the money spent. For sub-100$ speakers, I think you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find a better pair. I'm really happy w/ my decision: these speakers can keep up with the Clarion's in the rear, and seem to meld well with them. I'd suggest these speakers to anyone looking for a pair of entry-level cones that won't break the bank. -- great sound for the money...
